Room Mate Container: The smallest hotel in the world

Room Mate challenged us to create the smallest hotel in the world, with at least 4 stars. The first task was finding the right space for this petite Room Mate. We ended up choosing a cargo container, as this seemed to be the best option. The next steps involved fitting all the different requirements of a 4-star hotel room in it.

We found that the solution to the difficulties encountered when dealing with such a tiny space could be easily understood by observing Rubik’s cube. In fact, the various spatial modules we designed, spin around a central axis in order to obtain various coloured faces and spaces. The modules are assembled based on the customers’ needs, independently or collectively, and are able to accommodate multiple rooms and uses in just a few square meters.

When designing a hotel, another main challenge, is creating a comfortable and welcoming space for multiple customers that are unlikely to use it for more than a few hours. Moreover, nowadays, we expect much more from a hotel: not only the basics must be guaranteed, but also an emotional connection which makes us “feel at home” is required.

The access is not conventional and once inside the container, a neutral core space unveils the integrated modules, which are easily movable and are configured accordingly: a reception, a master bedroom and dressing room, a dining room, a bathroom, a bar and, finally, a gym and a resting area.
